Between the Squalls

An early-season snowfall had covered the Jackson Hole valley, not just the mountains, creating a scene I had never witnessed before. Hoback, one of Grand Teton's well-known bull moose, was among a group of five bulls simply existing together in the winter landscape.
Between passing snow squalls, the clouds briefly opened and sunlight spilled across the fresh snow. The bulls played and locked antlers, and the sound of their antlers meeting in that snowy stillness is something I will never forget.
I was in pure awe of the scene. It was also only a day after my dad moved to Jackson, a detail that may not mean much to anyone else looking at the photograph but means a great deal to me. Sharing a moment like this with him, while he was taking in the landscape with an even newer sense of wonder, made the encounter unforgettable.
