The Story

On this particular trip through Kruger National Park, we were seeing more elephants in a single day than I had ever seen before. There were groups of bulls, large families, and solitary elephants moving through the landscape. I took photograph after photograph, but nothing came together quite like this encounter.

This was a family group, and as they moved through the landscape, the older elephants kept a watchful eye on us. They were completely aware of our presence, and being watched by them while we watched them gave the moment a quiet intensity.

After a day filled with elephants, this image became the one that stayed with me. Seeing the generations together and feeling their awareness of us was a reminder that this landscape is their paradise, but for those of us lucky enough to witness it, it can feel like ours too.
